Manchester United’s search for goalkeeper reinforcements has taken another twist, with one potential target now heading elsewhere.
While Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim remains focused on key areas like central midfield and the attack, adding another option between the sticks has been quietly on the agenda.
With Tom Heaton signing a new one-year contract extension, but ultimately third choice, and Altay Bayindir’s future uncertain, United have been monitoring several goalkeepers across Europe and South America.
Andre Onana’s performances raised several concerns throughout last season, with questions often asked about his consistency and decision-making.
His struggles in key moments highlighted the need for more stability in United’s goalkeeping department.
Now, one of the names on United’s radar was John Victor, the highly-rated Brazilian currently at Botafogo, who has impressed scouts with his reflexes and shot-stopping ability.
But it now appears that United will have to look elsewhere, as the 29-year-old is set for a move to East London.
According to Fabrizio Romano via X, West Ham have reached a verbal agreement to sign John Victor from Botafogo, with a deal worth around €10 million (£8.6 million) nearing completion.
The Hammers have been searching for a long-term solution in goal and have moved swiftly to secure John’s signature after positive talks over the weekend.
The Brazilian has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League club, and only final details and paperwork remain before the deal is officially sealed.
Romano suggest that “documents are being checked,” and a “here we go” announcement is imminent.
United, who have also considered other options such as Diogo Costa, now appear to be focusing on more experienced names should they decide to reinforce the position before the transfer window closes.
John’s move to West Ham may be seen as a missed opportunity, but with other areas of the squad prioritised this summer, it’s unlikely to cause panic at Old Trafford.
Still, the 29-year-old’s arrival in England will be closely watched by United’s recruitment team, who may regret not acting sooner if he hits the ground running in claret and blue.
