Manchester United’s summer business has understandably generated excitement, with high-profile signings strengthening key areas of the squad.
However, while incomings dominate headlines, there remains an equally important focus on outgoings – a crucial part of balancing the books and ensuring squad depth does not turn into bloating the squad.
Finding the right solutions for fringe players is key.
Particularly for younger talents who need consistent minutes to develop.
That is where Toby Collyer’s situation comes into play, with the midfielder aware that first-team opportunities at Old Trafford could be limited this season.
Hull City had previously been in talks to take the 21-year-old on loan, which were progressing well.
However, another Championship side now appear set to secure his services.
According to The Athletic’s report, United midfielder Toby Collyer is in advanced discussions to join West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan, with the structure of the deal already agreed.
The Baggies believe Collyer can play a significant role in their push for Premier League promotion under head coach Ryan Mason, beating off interest from several second-tier clubs.
Speaking during United’s pre-season tour of the United States, Collyer stressed his priority was to play “as many minutes as possible,” whether that came in Manchester or on loan.
Collyer joined United’s youth ranks from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 and made his senior debut in the 2024 Community Shield against Manchester City.
He featured 19 times in all competitions last season, producing a standout moment in January’s 1-0 win at Fulham with a goal-line clearance.
But with Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence, Carlos Baleba’s potential arrival, and Manuel Ugarte’s continued presence, opportunities have narrowed.
Thus, making this move an important step in his development.
A move to West Brom would certainly pose as the perfect opportunity for Collyer to gain experience in a respected league.
Especially considering the timing of the loan move – Collyer’s loan move would end next summer, Casemiro may be out the door by then.
So, it wouldn’t come as much surprise if Amorim plans to embed a more experienced and polished Collyer in, once a midfield slot is freed up.
