Champions League qualification could prove decisive in Manchester United’s pursuit of top-level talent this summer, with Viktor Gyokeres among the key names under consideration.

Ruben Amorim’s side have continued to monitor the Sporting striker, who has netted a staggering 52 goals in 48 appearances this season.

Amorim managed the 26-year-old in Lisbon and maintains a strong relationship with the Swedish international.

Viktor Gyokeres expected to prioritise Arsenal over Manchester United

But according to The Telegraph, Gyokeres has made it clear to Amorim that he would only consider a move to Old Trafford if United are playing Champions League football next season.

Something that depends on winning the Europa League.

In contrast, Arsenal are currently viewed as the most likely destination for the former Coventry City forward should he leave Portugal.

The Telegraph report that new Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta is a major advocate for Gyokeres.

Having previously tried to sign him during his time at Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal are prioritising a new centre-forward this summer and want to end their long-running search for a traditional No 9.

The need was evident during their Champions League semi-final exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

Injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus left the squad stretched.

Academy talent Nathan Butler-Oyede was the only recognised striker on the bench.

Gyokeres’ international teammate Alexander Isak remains Arsenal’s ideal signing.

However, Newcastle United are not expected to entertain offers, especially if they qualify for the Champions League themselves.

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is another option under consideration.

The Telegraph add that Sporting are prepared to accept a fee below Gyokeres’ release clause and have already identified four possible replacements.

While United remain in the mix, their hopes are now pinned to European success.

Or risk losing out to a direct Premier League rival.
