Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in a similar position to Manchester United this summer, having to strengthen their squad after a disastrous season.
The two teams are seemingly set to face each other in the Europa League final, with a victory in that match being either side’s only lifeline for European football next season.
With United in 15th place and Spurs in 16th in the Premier League, the two sides have significantly struggled in the bottom half of the table for most of the season, and as such are now looking to very similar targets next summer.
Now, it looks as though Spurs are going to beat United to their defensive midfield target, Johnny Cardoso.

Tottenham Hotspur to trigger priority buy clause for Johnny Cardoso

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are both looking to Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso as part of their squad rebuilds; however, Spurs seemingly have the edge.
Last summer, Betis signed Giovani Lo Celso from Spurs, and as part of the deal, the London-based side were given a priority option to sign Cardoso this coming summer.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have a two-week window where they can trigger their clause to buy the star for £21 million.
Now, Give Me Sport has reported that the struggling side are looking to do just that.
The 23-year-old played a key part in Betis’ 2-1 win over Fiorentina in the UEFA Conference League Semi-Final last week, also having four goals and an assist in 41 games as a regular starter for the club,
As such, it would be no surprise if the United States international could return a much higher asking price in the summer.
With the signing for £21 million being an apparent bargain for the club, it could lead to United losing out of their target they were viewing as a replacement for Christian Eriksen.
The Denmark international is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract, with The Red Devils also looking for a long-term replacement for Casemiro.
Now, United may have to go back to the drawing board to look at alternatives to replace the veteran midfielders.
