A surprising new contender has emerged in the pursuit of Marcus Rashford, according to reports.

Rashford began his 2024/25 season by playing the full 90 minutes in Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford.

The club is eager to see a revitalized Rashford this season, following a challenging previous campaign both on and off the pitch.

Last season, the Mancunian forward faced significant difficulties, leading to a strained relationship with United’s manager, Erik ten Hag.

The tension between the player and the manager escalated to the point where Rashford’s future at the club was in jeopardy.

In response, Rashford had to engage in a clear-the-air discussion with ten Hag and the club’s new co-owners to prevent his United career from derailing.

There was earlier interest from Paris Saint-Germain in the English international, but Rashford’s poor form and Manchester United’s high asking price dissuaded any concrete offers.

As a result, Rashford remained with the club despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

The 26-year-old was notably absent from England’s squad for Euro 2024, a decision that, while disappointing, allowed him to have a full pre-season with United under ten Hag’s guidance.

However, whether this preparation will benefit United or another club remains uncertain.

Now, according to a report from Goal, Barcelona has set their sights on Rashford as a potential summer acquisition.

The Spanish giants have finalized the departure of midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who is going to rejoin Manchester City just a year after leaving the Premier League champions on a free transfer.

The move could generate funds for Barcelona’s reinforcements, although it’s noted that the deal is partly driven by the club’s significant €57 million expenditure on RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.

Goal’s report suggests that Barcelona’s manager, Hansi Flick, is keen on securing Rashford’s services, as he is looking to add a left winger with strong dribbling and shooting abilities to his squad.

Barca’s initial attempt to sign Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, who impressed with Spain during Euro 2024, was unsuccessful, leading them to shift their focus to the English forward.

Despite Rashford’s struggles last season, he has shown a renewed commitment and work ethic in the current campaign, though his finishing has yet to reach the desired level.

INEOS have decided to retain Rashford for the time being but have made it clear that the forward must improve his performances this season or face the possibility of being sold in the future.

Whether Rashford will remain at Old Trafford or embark on a new chapter in La Liga is still to be determined, as the transfer window unfolds.
