Manchester United continue to be linked with a number of strikers this summer as Ruben Amorim seeks to reshape his attacking options ahead of the new season.
With Marcus Rashford now gone with him being loaned out to Barcelona and Rasmus Hojlund still developing, United have been keeping tabs on multiple names across Europe, including those with proven goal-scoring records in difficult leagues.
The market for forwards has grown increasingly competitive, with clubs across the continent scrambling to finalise their attacking reinforcements before the new campaign gets underway.
United are expected to bring in at least one more attacker to ease the load on Hojlund and offer tactical flexibility, especially in fixtures where Amorim opts for a more direct approach.
One name that had quietly emerged on United’s radar was Luis Suarez — not the Uruguayan legend, but the Colombian striker who has just enjoyed a standout season in Spain.
Now, that chapter is officially closed.
Luis Suarez, fresh off a blistering 31-goal, 8-assist campaign with UD Almeria in the Spanish Segunda Division, has been unveiled as Sporting Clube de Portugal’s latest signing, as per the clubs official website.
The 27-year-old striker penned a long-term deal that will keep him at Alvalade until 2030, and his contract reportedly includes a significant buyout clause, underlining how much Sporting value him.
Speaking to the club after his arrival, Suarez described the move as “the biggest challenge” of his life and said he feels ready to prove himself on the biggest stage.
“I’ve reached the prime of my career,” said the Colombian.
“I’m eager to give a positive response to the directors who believed in me and the fans who have welcomed me so warmly.”
He’ll wear the number 97 shirt, honouring his birth year, and interestingly, has a lion tattooed on his arm – a symbol that now ties him more literally to the Lisbon-based club.
Suarez had been loosely linked to Manchester United earlier in the summer, but the Red Devils never firmed up their interest, and now it’s Sporting who’ve secured a player with immense upside.
For United, attention will now turn to other forward targets, with Amorim keen to land a striker who can contribute immediately.
