At the end of the transfer window, Manchester United made the decision to not sign a new midfielder despite looking at targets like Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion.

It’s understood the decision was made with United being happy with their current options at Old Trafford, having Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo, despite sending Toby Collyer on loan to West Bromwich Albion.

The move to loan out Collyer, whilst good for his development, has limited the options Ruben Amorim has at his disposal, so when Mainoo put in his request to also go out on loan for more gametime, United were obviously not keen to let him go.

As such The Red Devils rejected the move, wanting Mainoo to remain at the club and fight for his spot in the squad after dropping down the ranks under Amorim since returning from injury back in December.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has reported that the club’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had a say in rejecting the midfielder’s request.

Taking to his YouTube, Romano commented: “Manchester United internally decided, from what I’m told, also with Sir Jim Ratcliffe involved, also with the owner involved, that they couldn’t sell Kobbie [Mainoo].”

He continued: “So this was a decision made with all the people involved, directors, CEO, coach and owner.

“We can’t let Kobbie Mainoo go.”
