Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
United have been prioritising a remodelling of their attacking trio this summer, having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
Now, all that’s left is for Ruben Amorim’s side to sign a new striker, having missed out on Europe’s top talent already this summer.
Hugo Ekitike has joined Liverpool, Victor Osimhen has joined Galatasaray and Arsenal have signed Viktor Gyokeres, all of which were top targets on United’s shortlist.
Now, the club are left with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, with Sesko coming out on top.
The Red Devils are currently locked in a race for the striker with Newcastle United, as both clubs are looking to bring Sesko to the Premier League.
However, Newcastle made the opening move with Leipzig, launching a £70 million (€80 million) offer, consisting of a £65.5 million (€75 million) transfer fee and £4.5 million (€5 million) in add-ons.
Now, David Ornstein has reported that The Magpies have had their bid rejected by Leipzig.
The report explains that Leipzig have rejected the bid despite it meeting their valuation, as the club are also looking to add a sell-on clause to the sale of their striker.
This move by Leipzig leaves the door open for Manchester United, who are continuing to discuss personal terms with the Slovenia international and his representatives.
Despite Slovenian news claiming that Sesko has already chosen to join Newcastle, it’s believed that the striker will take a few more days to make his decision, having already had both projects pitched to him.
Now, Ruben Amorim will have to wait and see if he gets his third major signing this summer, with the Red Devils currently taking part in the Premier League Summer Series in America to prepare for the upcoming season.
