Manchester United face stern competition from Newcastle United for Benjamin Sesko.
The Magpies are just as desperate to sign a striker as the Red Devils, as Alexander Isak has formally informed them that he wants to join Liverpool this season.
United’s need for a striker comes not from a lack of numbers, but from a lack of quality.
They desperately require a forward who can consistently score goals.
Having Rasmus Hojlund lead the line clearly has not worked, as the Danish forward only found the back of the net 10 times in 52 appearances for the Old Trafford club.
Joshua Zirkzee, meanwhile, is not a traditional No.9. He describes himself as more of a “No.9.5,” which many agree with since he lacks natural goalscoring or poaching instincts.
He is far more effective at dribbling and creating chances, as shown last season.
Between them, Hojlund and Zirkzee scored just 17 goals, 10 for Hojlund and 7 for Zirkzee, a truly embarrassing return for Manchester United.
This is why the club is desperate to bolster its attack with a new striker.
Gyökeres eventually joined Arsenal.

United then turned their attention to Benjamin Sesko, and talks have been advancing quickly.
RB Leipzig make shock Rasmus Hojlund move
Leipzig have expressed strong interest in Rasmus Hojlund and have now made an approach for the striker.
Fabrizio Romano previously stated that Leipzig “dream” of signing Hojlund as Benjamin Sesko’s successor, and the latest reports indicate the Danish forward has been requested as part of the discussions for a potential Sesko deal.
United’s hierarchy could view a player-plus-cash arrangement as ideal, as they are eager to generate funds by moving on players who are not central to Ruben Amorim’s plans.
Hojlund, who has struggled to cement himself as the club’s main striker, fits that category at present.
Even so, Romano notes that Hojlund is determined to remain at Old Trafford and compete for his place.
He has not been formally asked to leave, but could evaluate his options later in the transfer window.
Amorim did acknowledge Hojlund’s contribution during the 4-1 pre-season win against Bournemouth in Chicago, yet he avoided giving any assurances about the forward’s long-term future at the club.
