Manchester United fans have grown increasingly frustrated by the club’s sluggish activity in the summer transfer window.

Matheus Cunha remains the only significant addition to the first team so far.

While further first-team reinforcements are essential, there’s also a strong emphasis on outgoings this summer.

Not just within the senior squad, but throughout the club’s youth setup.

Under INEOS, there’s a clear shift in strategy focused on maximising the potential of young talents.

Whether by integrating them into the first team or developing them elsewhere to eventually sell at a profit.

That wider youth strategy has taken another step.

Manchester United defender Habeeb Ogunneye has officially joined Newport County on a season-long loan, as officially confirmed by Newport on their official club website.

The deal is subject to EFL and international clearance.

The 19-year-old right-back, who’s been with United since the age of five, is expected to make his first appearance in Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly against Weston-super-Mare.

Ogunneye has been highly rated at Carrington for years.

He made his breakthrough in the Under-18s as a 15-year-old before gaining experience in Premier League 2, the EFL Trophy, and UEFA Youth League.

As well as with England U17s.

He was part of United’s senior matchday squad in February 2024 for the FA Cup clash against Nottingham Forest.

Before then being later named on the bench for the semi-final win over Coventry at Wembley.

Ogunneye was selected to train with INEOS-owned FC Lausanne Sport in October.

He trained with Lausanne’s first-team and will now get the chance to play in League Two.

Newport manager Dave Hughes, who previously coached Ogunneye at United, expressed delight at securing the young defender:

“He’s got loads of attributes… young, hungry, dynamic and really keen to improve.

“First-team football will be another challenge, but I think our supporters will really like him.”

United continue to strengthen ties with Newport, following Charlie McNeill’s loan to the club in 2023.
