It’s fair to say that things in the transfer window didn’t exactly go to plan this summer for Newcastle United.

The Magpies missed out on Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko as both attackers chose to go to Old Trafford to join Manchester United, whilst Hugo Ekitike opted to join Liverpool over a move to St James Park.

Adding insult to injury, Newcastle’s star striker Alexander Isak also decided he wanted to leave the club, forcing a move to join Ekitike at Anfield.

However, all was not lost as Eddie Howe did manage to recruit Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart and Yoane Wissa from Brentford on deadline day, with Anthony Elanga also having joined the club.

Now, with their attack seemingly sorted, Newcastle’s recruitment team are turning to make a new signing for their midfield.

TalkSPORT has now reported that Newcastle United are targeting Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window.

Kobbie Mainoo has found himself low down on Ruben Amorim’s selection list since the Portuguese manager took charge at Old Trafford, despite his previous performances under Erik ten Hag that saw him become a vital member of England’s 2024 Euro squad.

As such, the young midfielder requested a loan move at the end of the summer for him to be able to get more minutes on the pitch, with United rejecting the move, wanting him to fight for his place in the squad.

However, if Mainoo’s position in the squad doesn’t improve, it’s highly likely that he’ll push for a move once again in the winter, especially as he’s fighting for a spot in England’s 2026 World Cup side under Thomas Tuchel.

Should United allow him to go out on loan, Newcastle are likely to have significant competition however, with OGC Nice, Napoli, AS Roma, Marseille, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Everton all making approaches for the now two-time Golden Boy nominated midfielder.

However, given United’s rejection of Mainoo’s request to leave the club, even temporarily, it’s highly unlikely that The Red Devils will agree to losing the talented midfielder in January.
