Manchester United have undergone a major structural rebuild in the past 12 months, with INEOS continuing to leave their mark on football operations at every level.

From executive positions to academy reshuffles, the changes have been widespread as the new hierarchy looks to put its own stamp on the club’s future.

But while much of the focus has been on incomings, the outgoings have been just as significant.

Several long-serving figures across the club have now moved on, opening the door for fresh appointments and different pathways to take shape.

One of those was Adam Lawrence, whose departure back in May came as a blow to United’s academy structure.

Lawrence had been central to United’s youth development since 2021, guiding the Under-18s to three trophies in the 2023/24 season.

As well as playing a key role in the rise of eight academy graduates who went on to debut for the senior side.

Lawrence was among the names strongly linked to Newcastle United’s Under-21s vacancy, following interviews as part of a shortlist that included interim coach Robbie Stockdale.

Now, that speculation has reached its conclusion.

Adam Lawrence will officially take charge of Newcastle United’s Under-21 side on September 1st, as officially confirmed by Newcastle’s club website.

The 38-year-old moves to Tyneside after three years at Old Trafford.

A period during which he also oversaw player development from U13-U16 level, ensuring smooth progression into scholarships.

Before joining United, Lawrence spent eight years at Charlton Athletic as Head of Coaching and also worked within Millwall’s youth system.

Lawrence described the move as a “real privilege” and praised the academy’s vision for developing players as both footballers and people.

“I’ve always believed in creating environments where young players can grow – not just as footballers, but as people.

“That is something the Academy does very well.

“The club have a clear vision for development, and I’m looking forward to working with the staff and players to help each individual take the next step in their journey.”

Academy Director Steve Harper added that “his record speaks for itself but results only tell part of the story.”
