Manchester United remain determined to land Benjamin Sesko this summer — but are at risk of falling behind in the race.
After missing out on Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal and Liam Delap to Chelsea, United have shifted all focus onto the Slovenian striker.
The 22-year-old is seen as the ideal fit to complement Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes in Ruben Amorim’s revamped forward line.
But Old Trafford chiefs have so far stopped short of tabling a formal offer.
That lack of urgency may now prove costly.
As per David Ornstein’s report for The Athletic, RB Leipzig have received an improved bid from Newcastle United for Sesko.
The Magpies have raised their original offer of €75m (£65m) plus €5m (£5m) in add-ons to at least €80m (£70m).
The Red Devils are yet to meet that figure – and the fee they’ve indicated remains well below Newcastle’s proposal.
While Leipzig are still refusing to agree to a deal below their valuation, Ornstein states that Newcastle’s position has strengthened following positive talks between co-owner Jamie Reuben, Leipzig officials, and the striker himself.
Nothing has been finalised yet, and Leipzig could still retain Sesko if they remain unconvinced by the offers.
The player’s preference will be key, although Sesko has reportedly appeared to give more of a liking towards Newcastle.
Leipzig are standing firm and insisting both clubs must hit the required numbers regardless of where Sesko wants to go.
Newcastle’s interest in Sesko dates back to earlier this summer, when they began contingency planning for Alexander Isak’s potential departure.
Sesko, who scored 21 goals last season, has also attracted past interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.
His current Leipzig contract runs until 2029, although it features a gentleman’s agreement that allows him to leave for the right opportunity.
