Manchester United’s summer transfer window is already shaping up to be one of major upheaval under Ruben Amorim.

With the futures of several players hanging in the balance, United are set for an aggressive rebuild as the club plans to address holes in key areas across the pitch.

Amorim’s squad has relied heavily on youth over the last few months, with academy stars like Tyler Fredricson and Harry Amass stepping into first-team roles amid an injury crisis at the back.

The defensive shake-up is expected to continue, especially with Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof heading for the exit once their contracts expire.

And while those departures were expected, a new report suggests a more surprising name could be at risk of leaving this summer.

According to fresh claims from Tutto Sport, Inter Milan are eyeing a move for Matthijs de Ligt, who only joined United at the start of the season for £38.5 million.

Rather than making a straight bid, Inter are said to be preparing a loan offer with an option to buy — a deal that would suit them perfectly but leaves United with very little benefit.

The Italian club’s strategy often involves securing players on loan with an option to buy, allowing them to assess the player’s fit before committing to a permanent deal.

This approach was evident when they acquired former United defender Matteo Darmian on a season-long loan from Parma, which later became a permanent move.

Matthijs De Ligt has been one of the standout performers in an otherwise inconsistent United defence, with his defensive numbers speaking for themselves, but is currently out injured.

He currently leads the squad in blocks per 90 minutes and sits at the top of most defensive metrics, having registered 21 league blocks — more than Casemiro and Maguire combined.

The Dutchman’s familiarity with Serie A, having previously starred at Juventus, adds weight to Inter’s interest, but financial and tactical reasons make the move highly unlikely from a United perspective.

With Lisandro Martinez still out long-term and defensive reinforcements high on Amorim’s summer wishlist, letting go of De Ligt — even temporarily — would be a major risk.

Not only would it weaken an already thin backline, but it would also deny United’s next generation of defenders the chance to learn from one of the best.

Inter’s offer might make sense on paper — but for United, it’s a complete non-starter.
