Only a week ago, sports journalist Fabrizio Romano highlighted that before deadline day, Manchester United would be looking to sign a centre-back, right-back, left-back and midfielder.

After ticking off two of the four already this week, the Red Devils are eyeing a shock move to tick off another one of the positions.

This week has seen centre-back Matthijs de Ligt and right-back Noussair Mazraoui move to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich.

With United looking to develop their recent academy graduate Toby Collyer, as well as sign Manuel Ugarte and Youssouf Fofana from PSG and AS Monaco, that’s the midfield options covered.

But now, the Red Devils are turning to a former Premier League star to fix their issues at left-back.

Manchester United look to left-back Marcus Alonso

A recent report from The Athletic has announced that United are looking at the potential of bringing Marcus Alonso to Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea star left Barcelona at the end of last season and is now a free agent.

It’s been reported that the 33-year-old is open to a return to the Premier League, making the Spain international a cheap option to cover the left-back position.

Alonso has an incredible range of experience at the top level of football, coming through the Real Madrid academy, before spending three years at Fiorentina, six years at Chelsea and two years at Barcelona.

During this time, Alonso made 212 appearances for Chelsea grabbing 29 goals and 20 assists, and 84 appearances for Fiorentina, with five goals and seven assists, then 45 appearances for Barca with three goals to his name.

All this time in the top flights of European football gives him a total of 341 matches with 37 goals and 27 assists.

This incredible effort and contribution for a defender has supported his teams to win the Premier League, LaLiga, FA Cup, Champions League, Europa league, UEFA Supercup, FIFA Club World Cup and the Supercopa.
