Manchester United have been remarkably active in the early stages of this summer’s transfer market, a departure from their usual past behavior. This proactive approach is credited to the new hierarchy at the club, which has adopted a more strategic stance in their dealings.
Already, United have secured the signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro for reasonable fees. Both players are young, talented, and had standout performances for their respective teams last season, making them promising additions to the squad.
In line with this strategy, United are eyeing further acquisitions of young, talented individuals who have recently impressed at both club and international levels.
A new report from France suggests that United are now attempting to hijack Bayern Munich’s move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Xavi Simons. Bayern has shown significant interest in finalising a deal for Simons, but according to French publication L’Equipe, they now face competition from United.
United and PSG have been engaged in extensive talks over a potential move for another midfielder, Manuel Ugarte, who is valued at over £50.6m. Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Simons is Bayern’s top target for the remainder of the summer transfer window, with Rennes youngster Desire Doue as a potential alternative.
Bayern aims to secure a deal for Simons this summer but may consider waiting until 2025 for simpler negotiations. If Simons leaves PSG this summer, his former club PSV Eindhoven is entitled to a share of the sale. However, a 2025 departure would eliminate PSV’s involvement, potentially making it a more appealing option for PSG.
Simons, 21, enjoyed an impressive loan spell at RB Leipzig last season, scoring 10 goals and providing 15 assists in 43 appearances. He continued his strong form at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands.
While multiple reports indicate that United’s current priority is signing a defensive midfielder, such as Manuel Ugarte, with Martin Zubimendi and Adrien Rabiot also on their shortlist, Xavi Simons remains a significant target. Although an immediate move for Simons may not be imminent, it is a situation worth monitoring.
