Manchester United had an extremely busy, action-packed transfer window.
It was clear that INEOS and Ruben Amorim felt as though the problem lied with the Red Devils attack hence why we saw a huge chance with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko coming in, despite the clear midfield conundrum Amorim has on his hands.
As we all know during a football season, it’s never just the first eleven that the manager relies on.
Injuries, absences and dealing with the most bizarre situations in a season are a good marker of how good a manager is.
However, late on in the transfer market, in reaction to Alejandro Garnacho’s departure and Matheus Cunha’s injury vs Burnley, United made a late move for a Lyon winger.
Malick Fofana who played against Manchester United in the epic 5-4 comeback win in the semi-final of last season’s Europa League, was subject to late interest from the Red Devils.
According to a report in footmercato, Fofana has already been linked to prestigious clubs like Everton, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Chelsea but in the last two days of the transfer window United pushed to make a move for Fofana.
Jorge Mendes, who has a good relationship with the club and handles many clients across the footballing world was involved in negotiations between the club and Fofana’s father as the Red Devils pushed for a stunning late move.
Fofana was apparently tempted by the move and United were reciprocal in wanting his services as they waited for the player’s father to give the green light but it never came to fruition.
The move fell through and with it being so late in the window, no one did anything else with Fofana remaining at the French Club.
With Joshua Zirkzee and the option to push Fernandes forward later on in the season, United have plenty of options and depth regardless, but it was intriguing that they felt a move for Fofana may be a good one so late in the window.
