As reported by the Telegraph earlier this week, Manchester United are intensifying their efforts to bolster their midfield this summer, with three key targets on their shortlist. The club plans to sign one or possibly two of these targets, contingent on player sales during the transfer window.

Manuel Ugarte is identified as the primary target for Erik ten Hag’s squad. Should negotiations for Ugarte fall through, Martin Zubimendi is the secondary option. Additionally, Adrien Rabiot, a seasoned midfielder now a free agent after leaving Juventus, is also being considered. Rabiot’s availability without a transfer fee is particularly appealing to United.

Now, CaughtOffside has reported that Rabiot’s agents are engaged in discussions with Manchester United, as well as other top European clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Liverpool. The 29-year-old Frenchman is eager to make his Premier League debut and reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford. The CaughtOffside report indicates that United is currently leading the race to secure his signature.

Erik ten Hag is keen on finalising a deal for Rabiot, who delivered impressive performances at Euro 2024. Rabiot is demanding a salary that could reach £12.6 million annually, translating to £240,000 per week. He is seeking a three-year contract to make the move to Old Trafford. However, for this transfer to materialise, United must facilitate the departure of at least one or two current midfielders this summer.

Signing Rabiot would be significant for several reasons. His status as a free agent represents a considerable financial advantage, allowing United to allocate funds for other key areas. Moreover, Rabiot’s dynamic midfield capabilities are precisely what United needs. With Bruno Fernandes typically occupying the No.10 role and Kobbie Mainoo excelling at retaining possession from deeper positions, ten Hag requires a player who can effectively link play and exhibit strength in tackles.

Rabiot would excel in this role, providing the ideal complement for Mainoo to develop his skills under Ten Hag’s guidance. The Dutch manager aims to enhance his midfield options and adapt to various game situations. Alongside a defensive midfield addition like Ugarte, Rabiot would be a valuable asset to United’s squad.

This potential signing reflects United’s strategy to strengthen their midfield while navigating the complexities of the transfer market. The combination of Rabiot’s experience and Ten Hag’s tactical approach could significantly bolster United’s performance in the upcoming season.
