While Manchester United have focused heavily on reinforcing their attack this summer, midfield remains a clear area of concern heading into the new season.

The departure of Christian Eriksen has freed up one spot in the squad.

However beyond that, there is a noticeable lack of energy and athleticism in United’s midfield pivot.

Casemiro, once a dominant force, has struggled to maintain consistency and physicality.

The club’s other options lack the dynamism needed to thrive in the 3-4-3 double pivot.

Although United have Manuel Ugarte and have Kobbie Mainoo, fans remain intent on seeing a mobile, powerful presence in the engine room.

And now, according to L’Équipe’s report, United have gone on the attack for 21-year-old Carlos Baleba.

Direct contact has been made with Brighton to explore the conditions of a deal.

While no firm price has yet been quoted, United already know they are dealing with a potentially record-breaking figure.

Manchester City remain interested after making an approach in January.

However, they were put off by Brighton’s staggering €120 million valuation.

A number that could still apply this summer.

Liverpool and Arsenal are also monitoring the situation.

Although, United are believed to be in pole position, with Amorim making Baleba a “pillar” of his long-term project.

Such a move would also benefit Lille, who are due 20% of any resale fee above the €30 million (£26 million) Brighton paid in 2023.

Thus, meaning they could earn around €18 million (£16 million) if the full €120million (£104 million) figure is met.

As L’Equipe notes, Baleba’s rise has been “supersonic,” going from just six Ligue 1 starts with Lille to replacing Moises Caicedo at Brighton.

The latter having joined Chelsea for €116m (£100 million).

Fabrizio Romano on X adds that United approached Baleba’s camp this week to learn about the player’s situation.

Romano also states that Brighton are keen to keep him and would demand a very high fee.

David Ornstein for The Athletic also reports that intermediaries have contacted Brighton on United’s behalf.

However, all sides acknowledge a deal may be difficult unless United raise significant funds.

Still, with Amorim in need of strengthening both midfield and attack – and the Sesko deal nearing completion – all eyes will now turn to how far United are willing to push for Baleba.
