Wharton has been described as an “outstanding” talent and a great character by one of his former coaches (BBC Sport).
He has also previously attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, though United now look like a strong option.
Arsenal have shifted their focus to Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, while Liverpool pursued him last summer.
Wharton would give United a younger midfield option to dictate play in Eriksen’s absence.
Such technical quality and tactical awareness from the Englishman would be the type of signings United fans will crave come the summer window.
His arrival would also take off a lot of responsibility on Kobbie Mainoo’s shoulders, as Wharton is more renowned for playing in a double pivot.
Palace, however, will likely demand a high fee, while other top clubs could enter the race.
