Manchester United are yet to land a major signing in defence this window, but that hasn’t stopped their Premier League rivals from acting decisively.

Ruben Amorim has already secured Matheus Cunha to bolster the frontline, and a deal for Bryan Mbeumo appears close.

However, while attacking reinforcements are arriving, defensive targets are slipping through the cracks.

The Red Devils had been linked with several full-backs in their effort to strengthen the squad, with Tyrell Malacia’s uncertain future and Luke Shaw’s ongoing injury concerns making a new left-back a key priority.

But now, one of the club’s admired options has officially joined a rival.

Liverpool, via the clubs official website, have confirmed the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40 million deal, handing new manager Arne Slot another weapon in his defensive arsenal.

The 21-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Anfield and becomes the latest in a long line of high-profile acquisitions for the Merseyside club.

Milos Kerkez, who was once on United’s radar, recorded two goals and six assists across 38 league matches last season, emerging as one of Bournemouth’s standout players.

With Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes—who originally brought Kerkez to England—now pulling the strings at Anfield, the Reds were able to complete a swift move.

This latest transfer takes Liverpool’s total summer spend past £200 million following the additions of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, and Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Kerkez had been closely monitored by United scouts over the last year, but no formal offer was made, with the Red Devils opting for Patrick Dorgu instead.

Instead, United’s focus has remained on outgoings and shifting funds to boost other positions, particularly in midfield and attack.

Earlier this month, Bournemouth made preparations for Kerkez’s exit by signing Rennes left-back Adrien Truffert in a £14.3m deal.

While United continue to operate under a more cautious financial strategy, missing out on a Premier League-proven left-back to their fiercest rivals could sting—especially if Kerkez becomes a key figure under Slot.

United will now be expected to move quickly in the full-back market, with alternatives still being tracked.
