Liverpool and Manchester United are preparing for the 2025-26 Premier League season with United looking to improve on their 15th place finish last season whilst Liverpool will be looking for a continuation of the excellent form they displayed last season.

To achieve their aims, both sides have been signing players that they think can improve the depth and quality of their squads.

For Arne Slot’s side, it has meant signing Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and Bournemouth respectively.

Each of these players play in different positions which shows Slot’s intention to improve in several aspects ahead of the new season.

For Ruben Amorim’s side, it has meant recruiting Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million as well as Diego Leon and Enzo Kana-Biyik.

As was the case with Liverpool, each of these players play in different positions showing United’s intention to recruit and improve on differing areas ahead of the new season.

One player both clubs have been targeting is current Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.

The French striker impressed in the Bundesliga last season scoring 15 times whilst assisting on eight occasions.

This attracted the interest of both clubs alongside fellow Premier League side Newcastle United who have submitted an improved bid for the striker of around £87 million.

Now, according to Ben Jacobs, Liverpool have submitted an increased bid for the striker with the fee reported to be £78 million which is less than the bid made by Newcastle United.

Whilst both of these sides have been reported to have made bids for Hugo Ekitike, Manchester United’s attempts to sign the 23-year-old are looking to be unsuccessful although the Red Devils are still keeping an eye on the situation just in case the two club’s striving to gain the Frenchman’s signature are unsuccessful.
