Kobbie Mainoo remains one of Manchester United’s most gifted academy graduates in recent years.

A midfielder praised for his composure on the ball and ability to dictate games well beyond his age.

The 20-year-old’s emergence in 2023 saw him rise from a Carabao Cup debut into a central figure for club and country, even starring for England on their run to the Euro 2024 final.

For a time, he looked set to become a cornerstone of United’s midfield, with his intelligence and calmness marking him out as a generational talent.

But since Ruben Amorim’s arrival, Mainoo’s trajectory has slowed, with injuries, tactical tweaks and competition in attacking midfield limiting his minutes.

Now, according to talkSPORT, Mainoo would consider leaving United in the final week of the transfer window if a suitable offer is received.

The England international has been an unused substitute in both of United’s opening Premier League fixtures and has yet to agree a new deal, with his current contract running until 2027.

United’s stance is complicated further by PSR considerations, with academy sales counting as pure profit.

Something that could tempt the club to reluctantly cash in.

Mainoo has already racked up 72 senior appearances since debuting at 17.

While also earning a Golden Boy nomination in 2024, only losing out to Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal.

Yet uncertainty now clouds his role, with Amorim explaining after the Fulham draw that the youngster is “fighting for the position now with Bruno” and will need to battle Mason Mount and others for game time.

Clubs including Chelsea and sides abroad have previously shown interest, leaving United with a difficult decision.

Whether to meet Mainoo’s wage demands, or risk losing one of their brightest homegrown talents.

Regardless of where Mainoo goes – should he leave – United fans will only remain frustrated at the club’s handling of such a top talent.

To lose a young, classy midfielder at such a young age, with the team currently struggling for midfield quality and balance, would be a huge blow.

Eyebrows will certainly be raised at Amorim and the hierarchy.
