Manchester United have been exploring ways to strengthen multiple key areas of Ruben Amorim’s squad before the start of the new season.
The additions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have already bolstered United’s attack, with Amorim targeting players who combine goal-scoring output with Premier League experience.
But despite those signings, further business this summer hinges on player sales.
Despite recent reports that United don’t need to rely on sales before further incomings, outgoings are still expected in due course to avoid the squad becoming bloated.
A striker, goalkeeper and central midfielder are thought to be priority targets, should the right deals become available.
And one of the midfielders recently linked with a move to Old Trafford looks set to take a different path altogether.
According to Ben Jacobs on X, Ipswich Town have reached an agreement with Middlesbrough for Hayden Hackney, in a deal that could rise to £15 million with add-ons.
The England U21 international impressed under Michael Carrick and had been viewed as a potential long-term option for United, especially in the weeks following Carrick’s sacking.
However, Ipswich now appear to be leading the race, with manager Kieran McKenna – a former United coach – said to be personally involved in trying to convince Hackney to join.
It’s believed McKenna and Carrick remain close, with it appearing the United legend even advised McKenna to move for Hackney this summer.
The 23-year-old made 44 appearances for Boro last season, scoring five goals and assisting three, and remains one of the Championship’s most highly-rated young midfielders.
United may still enter the frame should sales free up enough funds, but unless talks collapse, Hackney is expected to join Ipswich and remain in the Championship for now.
