Manchester United’s search for a new goalkeeper is a sobering development for many supporters, given the optimism that surrounded Andre Onana’s arrival just two year ago.
Onana was supposed to be the long-term answer after replacing David De Gea in 2023, with his ball-playing qualities being his standout quality.
However, inconsistencies have forced the club to explore alternatives this summer.
Among those targets, Gianluigi Donnarumma has been viewed as something of a “dream signing” – a world-class option in his prime with years of elite experience ahead of him.
It has been said that a move is possible, although hinges on United making a significant amount from player sales first.
The Italian has long been admired at Old Trafford, and in recent hours, correspondent Andres Ramos has claimed that both United and Chelsea have enquired about his availability.
According to Fabrizio Romano on X, Donnarumma is now certain to leave PSG, with the Premier League understood to be his most likely destination.
The 26-year-old has been left out of the club’s Super Cup squad entirely, with the relationship between player and club described as “completely broken.”
There has been no agreement over a new contract, and PSG now view Lucas Chevalier as their goalkeeper of the future.
Romano reports that Donnarumma will depart either this summer or in 2026 as a free agent, but a move in the current window appears increasingly probable.
Premier League clubs have already made contact, with Donnarumma himself said to be disappointed by how events have unfolded in Paris.
His exit would end a four-year stint at PSG, where he won multiple domestic titles but struggled to establish an unshakeable bond with the club’s hierarchy.
For United, the opportunity to secure such a high-calibre replacement could be tempting – even if it means admitting their Onana gamble has failed earlier than expected.
Ruben Amorim was recently asked about Donnarumma, but expectedly chose to dodge the question.
