Mason Greenwood’s team for next year’s season has been up to much speculation already this summer, with a series of reports and interest from other clubs linked to the 22-year-old’s signature.

After such a strong season back in football with Getafe, winning the team’s Player of the Season award, it was no surprise to people that a post on X from the La Liga club’s official account hinted toward the club wanting to bring Greenwood back to their squad.

The post in question featured the winger waving to the Getafe fans with the caption “See you SOON, blues”. This suggested that the plan would be for the Englishman to be back in front of the Blues fans in no time at all.

However, recently it’s been speculated that United may look to trigger an extra year in the winger’s contract in order to retain the player at Old Trafford rather than let his contract run out next summer. This would allow the club to capitalise on selling or loaning Greenwood out without losing the player for free at the end of his contract if they no longer see Greenwood as part of their plans.

On the back of this, it was officially announced that Greenwood had been named in United’s retained list following the end of the 2023/24 season, potentially showing that Greenwood still features in the Red Devil’s plans.

Following this news, it looks as though Getafe are ending their pursuit of their recent Player of the Season, with The Athletic reporting that Getafe have now lined up Greenwood’s replacement.

Greenwood’s successor comes in the form of Real Madrid’s Arda Guler.

Despite his limited game time this season, only making ten appearances, Guler has managed to grab six goals in La Liga, showing the quality he possesses. The skill displayed by the Turkish midfielder which brought him to Real Madrid for €20 million, keeps him firmly in the mind of Carlo Ancelotti, with the manager looking to incorporate him more next year.

With Getafe now looking at other options, Greedwood’s return to La Liga is looking more unlikely, leaving the strongest link to another club sitting with Borussia Dortmund who are reportedly looking at Greenwood if they cant secure the signature of fellow teammate Jadon Sancho.
