Manchester United’s search for a new frontman has taken centre stage as pre-season continues with concerns mounting over attacking depth.

Questions remain over whether Rasmus Hojlund can shoulder the burden alone in a long and demanding campaign, as that was not the case last season.

Ruben Amorim has made it clear that reinforcements are necessary if the club hopes to compete on multiple fronts this season.

United’s transfer team has been working behind the scenes to identify viable forward options, but spiralling valuations and stiff competition are slowing progress.

And now, two top targets have already slipped through United’s grasp.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United made a late attempt last week to hijack Hugo Ekitike.

However, the 23-year-old had already committed to joining Liverpool, leaving United out of the picture before negotiations could progress.

In a separate attempt, United made an enquiry to Sporting CP regarding prolific Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.

But once again, the Red Devils were left disappointed after it became clear that Viktor Gyokeres is only interested in a move to Arsenal, putting an end to any potential deal.

Meanwhile, names like Benjamin Sesko, Ollie Watkins, and Nicolas Jackson continue to feature on internal shortlists and remain on the radar of top clubs across Europe.

Talks have taken place around those players at Old Trafford, but as it stands, they are not being actively pursued, largely due to inflated transfer fees.

That situation could change later in the window if price tags drop, but for now, United are shifting focus toward more realistic alternatives.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that United must act decisively – and perhaps creatively – if they are to avoid entering the season short of firepower up front.

United must also act quickly and smartly to secure a striker who can lead their attack and meet the demands of the season ahead.
