Manchester United’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper has taken another turn with a new update about their links with Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
The Red Devils have been looking to sign a new keeper for months now, since Andre Onana’s problematic season raised concerns over his ability to remain as the first-choice shot-stopper at Old Trafford.
Back in April, a shortlist of four keepers, including Parma star Zion Suzuki, AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, Brighton’s goalie Bart Verbruggen and Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa.
However, the shortlist also included Manchester City’s new incoming keeper James Trafford, with PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma also joining the list.
Over time, all these names have been left by the wayside, with only Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez and Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens being considered by the Red Devils.
Now, Manchester Evening News has reported that even a move for Emiliano Martinez is now being shut down, with United not wanting to inflate their salary demands, with the World Cup Winner having recently penned a new contract of over £200,000 per week.
As such this leaves Lammens as the only real contender to move to Old Trafford, with CentreDevils already revealing that the Belgian goalkeeper has already approved of the move.
It’s understood that whilst there was concern over Andre Onana’s hamstring injury he picked up in the first week of pre-season training, the Cameroon international is recovering well.
Whilst Onana was initially given a recovery timeline of six to eight weeks, his early response to treatment has shortened this to around four.
As such, Onana is looking likely to remain in the first-choice keeper role under Ruben Amorim, with Lammens coming in as a back up, however this heavily relies on the future of Altay Bayindir and whether or not he leaves the club.
