Manchester United are launching a second attempt to sign Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez as The Red Devils search for a secure option in goal.

Over the last two years, Andre Onana has been the first-choice keeper at Old Trafford, however his questionable decisions have left a lot to be desired.

Last season the Cameroon international led the list of Premier League goalkeepers for most mistakes made that have led to conceding a goal.

As such, the United recruitment team have been scouring Europe, and South America, to find a potential replacement.

Whilst a significant amount of varied options have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, a few names have been more consistent than others.

Botafogo’s John Victor was in the mix for a good while, with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens also featuring more prominently of late.

However, the clear favourite for some time now has been Emiliano Martinez.

The Aston Villa keeper brings a lot of quality and reassurance to the goalkeeping role, having won two Copa Americas and the World Cup with Argentina.

Last season alone, Martinez registered 16 clean sheets, with only 61 goals conceded in 53 games.

Now, Argentinian journalist German Garcia Grova has reported that United have entered into formal negotiations with Aston Villa after their approach for a loan deal was rejected.

Recent reports suggested that United were no longer looking to pursue Martinez, not wanting to inflate their already expensive salary outgoings.

However, this new report from Argentina suggests the fight for their key target isn’t over yet.

It’s understood that Ruben Amorim’s view is that he want’s Martinez to join his squad at Old Trafford to give some security behind the defence.

With a month to go until the season starts, there’s still time for United to make more signings, however the Red Devils are reliant on sales now to generate funds to make a move possible.
