After a dismal season in the Championship last year, Cardiff City find themselves in League One hoping to bounce back in their 2025/26 campaign.

The South Wales side came bottom of the table last season, seeing them only gain 44 points with a goal difference of -25, with only Plymouth Argyles -37 exceeding the Bluebirds.

As a result, Cardiff were joined by Plymouth and Luton Town in being relegated to the third tier of English football, their first time dropping this low in over 20 years since getting promoted to the second tier in the 2002/03 season.

Six games into the new season and Cardiff are currently sat at the top of the table, drawing on points with newly promoted Doncaster, having grabbed 11 goals and only conceded one, setting them ahead on goal difference, having one each of their games so far, except for their goalless draw with Port Vale.

With Brian Barry-Murphy tasked with leading the Bluebirds to promotion, Cardiff City are now looking to the future of the club, signing one of Manchester United’s recently released youngsters.

Taking to their official website, Cardiff City unveiled the signing of 19-year-old centre-back Jack Kingdon to their Under-21s side.

In a statement on the site, the League One side announced: “We are delighted to welcome Jack Kingdon to the Bluebirds, who will link up with Darren Purse’s U21 side.

“The defender arrives in the Welsh capital from Manchester United, where he gained experience out on loan at Rochdale.

“The 19-year-old has also regularly featured in the U18 Premier League and the Premier League 2 on his way to joining City.

“Jack’s arrival is our fourth signing at U21 level this summer, following the additions of Gabriel Keita, Charlie O’Brien and Matthew Apter.”

Speaking for the first time as a Bluebird, Kingdon commented: “I’m really excited to join a Club with such great history and I can’t wait to get going. I’m a very hard-working player who will always give my all for the team.”

He continued: “I went on loan to Rochdale, which was a good experience because it gave me a taste of men’s football. That helped me to learn my trade.

“I’ve looked at our recent results at U21 level and they’re positive. The team are scoring a lot of goals and keeping clean sheets, so I’m looking forward to playing with them.

“At First Team level, you can see young players making debuts and establishing themselves. I just want to be a part of that.”

As this is a free agent move, Manchester United will not be benefitting from the move with either a transfer fee or a sell-on clause being included to benefit from his future development, something which is being included in the majority of their departure agreements.
