Cagliari will be aiming to improve on last season’s 16th-place finish in Serie A, where they narrowly avoided relegation.

The Italian side have already taken steps to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign, bringing in Roberto Piccoli, Elia Caprile, Gianluca Gaetano, and Michel Adopo.

With a focus on building a more competitive team, Cagliari are still active in the transfer market and are reportedly interested in signing a centre-back, including  former Manchester United defender.

According to Calcio Mercato, the Italian club Cagliari have been offered the chance to sign Eric Bailly, who is currently a free agent after spending the past two years at Villarreal.

However, the current stumbling block for any potential deal is Bailly’s wage demands, which are reportedly expected to be at least €1 million per season, an amount that could prove difficult for the Serie A side to match.

Eric Bailly originally joined Manchester United in the summer of 2016 from Villarreal.

Known for his pace, physicality, and aggressive defensive style, Bailly was part of the squad that lifted both the EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League during the 2016-17 season.

Despite a promising start to his United career, his time at Old Trafford was disrupted by frequent injuries and inconsistent performances, preventing him from ever fully cementing a starting role.

After making 113 appearances across all competitions, Bailly left United in the summer of 2023 to join Turkish side Besiktas.

Cagliari would welcome the addition of the experienced Ivorian centre-back, who could bring leadership and depth to a squad determined to improve on last season’s 16th-place finish in Serie A.

Meanwhile, Manchester United continue to focus on their own transfer business, actively targeting a striker, midfielder, and goalkeeper following the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
