Manchester United’s pre-season tour has raised more questions than answers despite lifting the Premier League Summer Series trophy.
With just one game left before the new campaign kicks off, Ruben Amorim’s men are still trying to fine-tune their rhythm.
The new signings have shown promise, particularly Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but there’s growing concern about consistency in performance levels.
As Amorim prepares his side for their final warm-up clash against Fiorentina on 9 August, there’s an urgency to address glaring issues in both midfield intensity and squad depth.
United’s Premier League opener against Arsenal on 17 August looms large — and it’s clear not everyone in the squad is ready.
That was made brutally clear by Bruno Fernandes, who didn’t hold back following United’s 2-2 draw against Everton in Atlanta on Sunday.
The skipper, who opened the scoring from the spot in the 19th minute, was visibly frustrated after United surrendered the lead twice in the game.
Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye equalised with a superb volley before Mason Mount put United back in front, only for Ayden Heaven to concede a late own goal.
But it wasn’t just the result that annoyed Fernandes — it was the attitude.
“Our performance wasn’t the best, and we were a little bit lazy today,” he told NBC Sports via X.
“We want to avoid that because with laziness, you can pay at any moment.”
Bruno Fernandes also showed signs of frustration during a brief spat with Ndiaye shortly before the Toffees’ second goal, clipping the Everton man as he tried to dribble away.
The 30-year-old then admitted that the squad needs strengthening before the window shuts.
“It’s improving,” he said.
“But it’s not the place it needs to be… it was crystal clear we needed more competition… more quality to get everyone to step up.
“Hopefully, we can get one or two players more to help with that.”
United have brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon, and are known to be tracking RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.
Manager Ruben Amorim responded to his captain’s comments, saying: “I think I’m happy for the players to have that feeling.
“It’s saying that they understand the situation.”
He added: “We had the weeks to work… and then we go back to Carrington, and we are near to start the season.
“We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things [better].”
“The culture of this club was winning… And we need to bring back that.”
