Having completed a trio of major attacking signings, Manchester United appear ready to shift their focus elsewhere in the squad this summer.
While the incoming arrival of Benjamin Sesko has added firepower up front, United’s midfield has been highlighted as the next department in need of a serious upgrade.
Ruben Amorim has been clear about his desire for a more athletic presence in the middle of the park.
Someone who can bring both energy and control to a midfield that’s not quite fit for purpose.
Given the context, a midfield signing was always expected.
But few would’ve predicted that United would target one of the best young players available in that position.
News circulated on Wednesday evening of United’s interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
But the Seagulls already have a long-term replacement lined up.
Baleba fits Amorim’s vision perfectly: physically dominant, technically sound, and defensively aware.
INEOS’ decision to go public with interest also suggests real belief that a deal is possible.
However, the price is steep.
Brighton reportedly want a £104m package, which would be difficult for United to justify without major sales.

Something they’ve yet to pull off this summer.
According to The Athletic’s report, Brighton’s long-term plan involves 19-year-old Malick Yalcouye, who is set for another loan spell before eventually replacing Baleba in 2026.
Brighton’s recruitment brilliance continues – just as Baleba succeeded Moises Caicedo, Yalcouye is being groomed as the next in line.
United previously missed out on Baleba while he was at Lille.
The Red Devils scouted Yalcouye in 2024 but failed to act.
Brighton did, and now the teenager could soon become their next £100m midfielder.
It’s a painful reminder of United’s past recruitment shortcomings – but INEOS are certainly making a real stamp on recruiting level-raisers for Amorim’s rebuild.
