Marcos Rojo, once a key figure in Manchester United’s defence, now finds himself at a crossroads after recently being released by Boca Juniors.
The 35-year-old was part of the Argentine giants’ squad during the Club World Cup in the United States, but did not feature in any matches as Boca endured a disappointing campaign.
Boca Juniors’ performances fell well short of expectations, with the team drawing 2-2 against Benfica, losing 2-1 to Bayern Munich, and then being held to a 1-1 draw by the amateur side Auckland City.
These results led to mounting pressure on the club’s management, and Marcos Rojo soon found himself out of favour under new head coach Miguel Russo, who took over in May.
Despite having six months left on his contract, Rojo’s deal has been terminated, as per ESPN via The Sun.
It is understood he will not return to Argentina with Boca Juniors, who currently sit joint-top of the league table in the midst of their season.
This unexpected exit leaves Rojo searching for a new club, with Europe likely the next destination.

Rojo’s journey to Boca began after a stint with Sporting Lisbon and Spartak Moscow, but he is perhaps best remembered for his time at Manchester United.
The Red Devils paid £16 million to sign him in 2014 from Sporting.
His first three seasons at Old Trafford were successful, helping the club win the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, and the Europa League.
Unfortunately, a serious cruciate ligament injury in 2017 marked a turning point.
While he amassed 95 appearances in his first three years, his involvement sharply decreased afterwards, featuring just 27 times over the subsequent three seasons.
Marcos Rojo revived his career somewhat in Argentina, playing 44 times in 2022 and helping Boca clinch the league title, but a decline in form and fitness eventually led to his release.
With his status as a free agent now confirmed, all eyes will be on where the former United defender lands next as he seeks to extend his playing career.
