Manchester United’s pursuit of a new striker continues to dominate the headlines as the 2025/26 season edges closer.

While Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have already added flair and depth to United’s attack, Ruben Amorim is still searching for a dominant central figure to complete his new-look frontline.

The club’s long-standing interest in RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko has yet to materialise into a formal offer, even as Newcastle United upped the stakes with an improved bid.

Sesko is reportedly open to joining either Premier League club, but United’s hesitation has allowed the Magpies to close in, with Leipzig leaning towards their proposal.

And with time running out, Amorim is preparing to turn back to more familiar territory in a bid to avoid missing out completely.

According to The Sun, United are eyeing two Portugal-based alternatives — Samu Aghehowa of Porto and Evangelos Pavlidis of Benfica — should they fail to land Sesko.

Samu Aghehowa, formerly known as Samu Omorodion, is a 6ft 4in Spain international of Nigerian descent who scored an eye-catching 27 goals last season for Porto.

He made headlines last year when he netted a brace against United in the 3-3 Europa League draw, and was previously courted by Chelsea and Newcastle.

United would need to buy out 100% of his economic rights to comply with FA and Premier League rules, with Porto demanding £70 million for a full transfer.

Pavlidis, meanwhile, offers a slightly different profile.

The 26-year-old Greek forward scored 28 goals last season — nine of them in the Champions League — and is being valued at £52 million by Benfica.

He’s entering his prime and would be considered the more economical option of the two, having joined from Willem II just last year and quickly becoming a fan favourite.

Should Sesko join Newcastle, Amorim appears fully prepared to raid Liga Portugal — and Manchester United’s striker shortlist has just gained two serious contenders.
