Manchester United held talks with Brighton for Carlos Baleba to try and pursue a deal in recent days but they called their pursuit off yesterday.
The club are now expected to turn to alternatives.
This will come as a huge blow, as the Red Devils made him their number one target for midfielder.
Several talks were held with his agents, but with a deal not materialising, other options will need to be pursued.
Now, the BBC are reporting that Manchester United are targeting an alternative for Baleba.

According to BBC Sport, Manchester United are now assessing their midfield situation, with Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand, a player Amorim knows well, likely to be available.
Morten Hjulmand and Ruben Amorim have a history together, with Amorim bringing Hjulmand to Sporting CP in 2023 and naming him captain.
Hjulmand is familiar with Amorim’s 3-4-3 system and is known for his leadership qualities.
He will be a huge addition to the team, giving competition to the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Manuel Ugarte.
With Toby Collyer leaving on loan officially now, a midfielder is needed this summer.
Given his accomplishments in the Primeira Liga and Europa League, United feels their valuation is reasonable, and the Danish international has been highlighted as a major target.
A number of talented midfielders are being considered to bolster the middle of the pitch as the Red Devils rebuild their team in an effort to return to the top of European football.
With Baleba out of the picture, Hjulmand could be the option the Red Devils pursue.
The club have already completed the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and now Benjamin Sesko.
These three will play a huge part in what will be a challenging season.
Hjumland could be the perfect midfielder option for United.
