Manchester United’s transfer planning for the 2025/26 season is beginning to intensify behind the scenes, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Jason Wilcox and manager Ruben Amorim identifying key targets to help reshape the squad.

United’s recruitment strategy this summer will balance long-term talent development with marquee-level signings, especially with several first-team players expected to depart.

Florian Wirtz has long been admired by the Old Trafford hierarchy, though any pursuit of the German international has always come with heavy financial barriers.

The 21-year-old, who helped Bayer Leverkusen lift the Bundesliga title under Xabi Alonso last season, is one of Europe’s most coveted attacking midfielders.

But now, United may have to rule themselves out of the race entirely as Bayern Munich prepare to shatter transfer records to secure his services.

According to L’Equipe, Bayern Munich are ready to spend an astronomical €250 million to sign Wirtz, which would include €125 million paid to Bayer Leverkusen and another €125 million in wages over a five-year contract.

The report claims that Bayern legends Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have made the signing a personal mission before their final retirement from football, with multiple meetings already held with Wirtz’s father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz.

Sporting directors Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are now tasked with trimming the squad, with the likes of Goretzka, Coman, Gnabry, and Guerreiro all potentially up for sale to fund the move.

Bayern see Florian Wirtz as a generational player to build around alongside Jamal Musiala, and a verbal agreement is already believed to be in place.

Manchester United had been tracking Wirtz, with Amorim reportedly a fan of his creativity and tactical intelligence, but the financial scale of Bayern’s offer makes it near impossible for the Red Devils to compete—especially without guaranteed Champions League football next season.

Unless Bayern’s pursuit unexpectedly collapses, United may have to look elsewhere as Wirtz appears increasingly destined for Bavaria.
