Manchester United’s transfer window ended with plenty of drama and a sense of unfinished business.

Ruben Amorim has already spoken about the need for balance in his squad, and fans have been quick to point out the lack of depth in midfield.

Injuries and suspensions are expected to test United in the coming weeks, with a heavy schedule of league fixtures ahead.

Midfield reinforcements were always high on the agenda, but time ran out before Old Trafford could secure one more addition.

As the window entered its final stretch, United were active behind the scenes looking at options across Europe.

There were links to several names, but one particular target only came to light after deadline day had passed.

In the final 48 hours of the market, United made a late attempt to bring in fresh energy for their midfield.

That player was Conor Gallagher, who is currently on the books at Atletico Madrid after leaving Chelsea last summer.

United approached the Spanish club with a loan proposal, hoping to strike a quick deal before the deadline shut.

However, Atletico were in no mood to negotiate and swiftly rejected the idea of a temporary move, as per Fabrizio Romano via YouTube.

It was not the first time they had turned down such an approach.

Just ten days earlier, Crystal Palace had also tested the waters with a similar offer and were met with the same response.

Atletico’s stance was clear: Conor Gallagher would not be leaving on loan under any circumstances.

Conor Gallagher, valued for his energy and box-to-box qualities, could have provided Amorim with exactly the type of midfielder his system thrives on.

With Casemiro ageing, Kobbie Mainoo’s future undecided, and Bruno Fernandes shouldering much of the creative load, Gallagher’s intensity might have offered an ideal solution.

Instead, United are left short in that department heading into a demanding first half of the season.

Supporters will now look towards the January transfer window, where midfield additions are likely to be revisited.

Gallagher’s name may reappear on the shortlist, but for now, Atletico’s firm rejection has ensured that United must make do with what they have.
