Real Betis have been rather vocal in their desire to retain Antony for next season after his loan came to an end at the end of the season.

The winger went on loan in the winter transfer window after experiencing a decline since moving to Old Trafford.

Antony has been struggling for game time with Manchester United so saw his move to LaLiga as a chance to kickstart his career anew.

Taking the opportunity in his stride, the 25-year-old showed glimpses of his Ajax days, grabbing nine goals and five assists in 26 games, helping Betis get to the final of the UEFA Conference League and place sixth in LaLiga.

Unfortunately though, the Spanish side have been struggling to make his move permanent with this £200,000 per week wage proving too costly for Betis.

With the hefty salary burden, and his £30 million price tag exceeding Betis record signing of Denilson for £21.5 million in 1998.

However, Betis’ desire to sign Antony is still there with CentreDevils revealing the Spanish club made contact with United last week, which could be a result of an imminent deal with Atletico Madrid.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Atletico Madrid are getting close to signing Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis.

The deal is reportedly coming in at £25.5 million (€30 million), which would leave only a small amount to cover of Antony’s fee if these funds were to be redirected.

It’s understood that the Cardoso is signing on a five year contract with details being finalised soon.
