Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid have entered the transfer battle for one former Manchester United defender.

Atletico are competing with LaLiga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona for the league title as Diego Simeone keeps his side punching above expectations.

One of the ways that Simeone has gotten his teams to compete with the traditional top two is by cultivating talent.

The likes of Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak, Diego Costa and Diego Godin became established world class players under the Argentina legend.

And it seems that Los Colchoneros are looking at a former Manchester United man to replicate the same success in the future.

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Atletico Madrid have named Alvaro Carreras as their next target ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Portuguese paper states that “[Manchester United] could bring the full-back back to Old Trafford for 20 million euros [but] Atletico de Madrid’s managers will go all out for the player.”

Known as Alvaro Fernandes during his time in England, Carreras has become hot property since sealing a move to Portugal.

During Carreras’ time with United, before transferring to S.L. Benfica in 2024, he was named Manchester United’s U23 Player of the Year.

More recently, Carreras’ excellent performance for Benfica led to him receiving the Cosme Damiao Award for revelation of the year.

And now, with three goals already under his belt for The Eagles, the 22 year-old’s market value is higher than ever before.

Manchester United do have an option to sign the player back, but that seems highly unlikely after United invested in the signing of Patrick Dorgu in January.

Instead, United interest is likely going to be in how much Atletico Madrid want to pay for Alvaro Carreras.

Manchester United have a sell-on clause that was inserted into the contract when they sold the player to Benfica and could have a decent level of income if the player goes to Spain from Portugal.

And so it remains to be seen with if Alvaro Carreras will join Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid in the future.
