Manchester United have already made strides in their summer rebuild under Ruben Amorim, with the £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha.

The Red Devils are now firmly in market mode, aiming to add several key reinforcements across all areas of the pitch.

While the club push ahead with deals for Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike and potentially Xavi Simons, attention is now turning to the goalkeeper position.

United’s decision-makers appear increasingly pragmatic about finding the right experienced addition.

And at the centre of the latest speculation is one name: Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper, Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez, currently at Aston Villa.

According to Ole, Manchester United have become the first club to make formal contact with Aston Villa regarding Martinez’s availability.

That move came just three days before the Premier League transfer window opens, with United calling Birmingham to enquire directly about terms.

It was also reported United made contact with Martinez’s representatives.

Emiliano Martinez, 32, remains under contract at Villa until June 2029.

However, Villa Park valuations reportedly put his fee at €40 million—approximately double Villa’s 2020 investment.

That figure reflects both the goalkeeper’s peak form and his status as one of the finest shot-stoppers in Europe.

Renowned for his commanding presence and penalty-saving heroics, Martinez is celebrated for three consecutive major awards: the 2022 FIFA Best Goalkeeper and the Golden Glove at the 2023 and 2024 Copa America tournaments.

That standing makes him an extremely attractive target for a club in need of leadership at the back.

Internally, sources indicate United and Villa have initiated “protocolo conversations”—official but preliminary discussions—with both clubs now gauging where a potential agreement could land.

Whether United would pay that fee, or Villa might soften their demands, remains to be seen.

At Old Trafford, urgency is rising.

Andre Onana, United’s current first-choice stopper, let in 65 goals across 50 matches last season—averaging a goal conceded every 70 minutes.

Many of those goals, it’s argued, stemmed directly from Onana’s distribution errors and struggles with crosses.

Thus, Amorim and his coaching team appear determined to bring in a proven goalkeeper who can elevate standards and restore consistency—especially ahead of the critical season starting in August.

If the deal succeeds, Martinez would become only the ninth Argentine to don the United shirt.

With legends like Juan Sebastian Veron, Gabriel Heinze, and Lisandro Martinez preceding him, Dibu would join a growing South American connection at Old Trafford.

All told, a move for Martinez would reinforce United’s ambition to rebuild a squad capable of genuine Premier League and Champions League contention.
