Manchester United’s pre-season tour in the United States continues to dominate headlines, with fixtures against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton giving Ruben Amorim a valuable chance to test his new recruits.
Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have both joined in a summer outlay that has surpassed £120 million, but United’s transfer business is far from over.
Several areas in the squad still need urgent attention, especially in the striker department where Rasmus Hojlund remains the only established name.
United were heavily linked with another young striker not too long ago, and developments in his career have taken an interesting twist.
AS Roma have confirmed, via the clubs website, the signing of Evan Ferguson from Brighton & Hove Albion, securing the 20-year-old on loan with an option to buy.
The Irish forward had attracted attention from Manchester United in the past, but that speculation has now been put to bed with Ferguson sealing a move to Serie A.
Interestingly, Roma had been pursuing United’s Rasmus Hojlund earlier this summer.
Ferguson now arrives in the Italian capital as Roma’s alternative option, and the club has expressed delight in acquiring the highly rated striker.
Born in Bettystown, Ireland, on 19 October 2004, Evan Ferguson becomes the first ever Irish player to join the Giallorossi.
He began his career with Bohemian FC before signing for Brighton in 2021 and later spending a loan spell with West Ham in January 2025.
On the international stage, Ferguson made his debut for the Republic of Ireland in November 2022 and has since netted four goals in 18 appearances.
Across all competitions for club and country, he has made 103 appearances and scored 21 goals.
Ferguson has opted to wear the number 11 shirt at Roma, a sign of the faith the club has in him to become a key figure in attack.
While United missed out on Ferguson once upon a time, they’ll undoubtedly be keeping an eye on his development in Italy.
