Manchester United and Ruben Amorim face an interesting dilemma between the sticks this summer.
Andre Onana is, currently the first choice at Old Trafford, having arrived from Inter Milan for around £45m in 2023.
But the Cameroonian has endured a difficult season, featuring multiple high-profile mistakes.
Two of those came in United’s first leg of their Europa League quarter-final against Lyon.
In the build-up, former United midfielder Nemanja Matic described Onana as “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history”, and the goalkeeper did not do much to prove him wrong.
Two key errors led to Lyon goals in the resulting match, but United did progress into the semi-final regardless, after a chaotic second leg.
Onana’s errors have resulted in discussions over his future at the club, with links to goalkeepers emerging in recent weeks.
One of those links was to Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who would certainly expect to take the starting role if he were to move.
Another link was to RCD Espanyol stopper Joan Garcia, although, according to Sport, Arsenal look likelier to win the race for the Spaniard.
The Spanish publication claims that Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City are all interested in a move for Garcia this summer, with the Gunners best placed.
Mikel Arteta’s team did show significant interest in Garcia last summer, hoping to provide back-up to fellow Spaniard David Raya, but failed with a bid before the window closed.
Sport claims the 23-year-old, who has played a crucial role in Espanyol’s fight for survival in La Liga, has a €25m release clause in his contract.
However, Garcia’s desire for first-team football could throw a spanner in the works for Arsenal, who are unlikely to replace Raya in goal.
