Winners

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire is set to thrive under Ruben Amorim, who employs a three-centre-back system that aligns perfectly with his strengths.

Maguire has historically looked more comfortable in a back three, particularly during his time with Gareth Southgate’s England side, where he excelled.

In Amorim’s system, he will likely take up the central centre-back position, which should help to negate his weaknesses in one-on-one defending and mobility.

This role maximizes his ball-playing ability, allowing him to contribute more effectively to the build-up play.

However, Maguire may need to compete with Matthijs de Ligt for this position.

Manuel Ugarte

Manuel Ugarte could see a significant boost in his performance under Amorim, having previously thrived in a similar system at Sporting.

Known for his ability to dominate small spaces and win the ball back, Ugarte struggled under Erik ten Hag’s management, as the midfielders often faced large gaps to cover, leaving them exposed.

Amorim’s tactical approach focuses on minimising these gaps, making Ugarte’s skills in ball recycling and retention invaluable to the team.

This change could help Ugarte realize his full potential and establish himself as a key player in the midfield.

Marcus Rashford

Rashford’s goal-scoring potential can be unlocked under Amorim, who is likely to use him closer to the goal rather than as a facilitator stuck on the touchline.

With only eight shots in the Premier League this season, Rashford needs to be positioned to capitalise on his finishing ability.

While there are doubts about his fit in the team, he may adopt a role similar to current Sporting player Conrad Harder, pushing into the last line and running in behind to stretch defences.

Rasmus Hojlund

Rasmus Hojlund is poised to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Amorim’s appointment.

Although he has shown flashes of talent, he has struggled to find consistency at United, often being asked to play with his back to goal and wrestle with defenders.

This approach does not leverage his best strengths, which lie in his remarkable running power.

Amorim’s system will likely encourage Hojlund to use this attribute, allowing him to make channel runs and stretch defences.

Drawing comparisons to Victor Gyokeres, the top scorer in Europe in 2024, Hojlund’s goal tally should rise significantly as he becomes more involved in attacking movements, particularly with the expected increase in crosses and cutbacks aimed at his skill set.

Harry Amass

Harry Amass, who has yet to make an appearance this season despite being touted as a promising talent by ten Hag, may find renewed opportunity under Amorim.

The new head coach has a proven track record of promoting youth players, having integrated 24 academy talents during his time at Sporting.

Amass is likely to be utilized as a wing-back, a position that could mitigate any defensive issues associated with his age.

Given the ongoing left-back challenges at United, Amorim may provide Amass with the chance to prove himself and potentially carve out a significant role in the first team.
