Back 3

Much of Harry Maguire’s success in his career has come when he plays in a back three.

Positioned at the centre of the defence, this role accentuates his strengths while minimising his weaknesses.

Maguire’s aerial dominance is a key asset, and under Ruben Amorim, he is often tasked with neutralising aerial threats.

He matches up well against most centre-forwards, effectively nullifying any attempts by the opposition to play directly into their striker.

The central centre-back (CCB) role also requires defending the box extensively – a task in which Maguire thrives.

His positional awareness allows him to anticipate danger, clear his lines, and keep his team secure.

In the past, Maguire’s lack of mobility and struggles in wide channels have been significant issues.

However, playing in the middle of a back three means he is rarely exposed in these areas.

While he occasionally needs to sweep across, the reduced distances and limited one-on-one situations suit his skill set perfectly.

Maguire has been outstanding in Amorim’s system, and the manager will be hoping this resurgence continues for as long as Maguire remains at the club.
