6. David Moyes

As the first manager chosen to replace Ferguson, David Moyes faced the near-impossible task of filling the boots of a legend.

While handpicked by Ferguson himself, Moyes never seemed like the right fit for United.

His time was marred by transfer mishaps – United floundered over signing Marouane Fellaini from Everton, eventually overpaying, and failed to land key targets like Toni Kroos.

This era of long-ball football seemed outdated, and Moyes’ inability to inspire confidence left fans frustrated.

He only lasted 10 months before being sacked, leaving United outside the Champions League spots for the first time since 1995.

5. Ralf Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick arrived at United in November 2021 with great anticipation.

Known for pioneering the gegenpress, he was expected to revitalize United with an aggressive style of play.

But Rangnick’s ideas never took root, and his win rate, 39%, reflected the struggles of his 29-game stint.

His pressing system, which influenced managers like Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel, was absent.

Although he was supposed to transition into a consultancy role, Rangnick’s blunt assessment of United’s issues, famously calling for “open-heart surgery,” left him leaving the club.

His short tenure highlighted United’s internal issues and perhaps nudged the club toward much-needed structural changes.

Despite his lack of success, Rangnick’s time may ultimately have served a purpose, exposing United’s need for a more cohesive approach.
