Defence
In Ruben Amorim’s system, the wing-backs are arguably the most critical positions on the pitch.
They must cover the entire flank, contribute to build-up play, remain defensively solid, and provide creativity in the attacking third.
However, wing-back is an area where Manchester United currently lack depth and quality, prompting them to consider entering the transfer market.
During training, Tyrell Malacia was seen at wing-back, but having just returned from over a year out injured, it’s unlikely he will start.
On the right side, Antony also trained in the role and may be an option in the future.
However, for Amorim’s first game, the manager is expected to opt for defensive reliability.
Amorim will likely start either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui at right wing-back.
Similarly, Garnacho is unlikely to be risked at left wing-back, meaning Mazraoui or Dalot could also feature on that side.
Amorim faces an even tougher challenge selecting his centre-backs.
Leny Yoro is considered the long-term solution at right centre-back but has only just returned from injury and may not be fully fit.
With Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof ruled out and Lisandro Martinez nursing a knock after international duty, Yoro might be forced to start.
This would likely see Matthijs de Ligt anchor the defense at central centre-back, with Martinez taking the left center-back role if fit.
If Martinez doesn’t recover in time, Amorim could be forced to call on Jonny Evans or experiment with a full-back in the wide centre-back position.
