On-Ball Approach

Amorim has preferred a three-center-back system since early in his career.

His 3-4-2-1 formation often features advanced wingbacks to provide width, a double pivot in midfield, and two number 10s supporting a lone striker.

His build-up play is particularly unique, frequently involving one centre-back moving up into midfield, allowing one of the double-pivot players to push forward and act as a second-phase outlet.

The goalkeeper also becomes part of the build-up, a role that suits Andre Onana’s distribution abilities, creating a 3-2 structure.

This approach allows the wingbacks to remain high and wide, offering passing lanes, while one of the 10s and the advanced pivot player complete a “box” midfield.

The striker, often positioned in the channels, provides a direct outlet when under pressure.

Notably, Amorim is willing to adjust his setup based on player profiles, a flexibility Erik ten Hag sometimes lacked.

Suited Players

Several United players could excel in this system.

Rasmus Hojlund, with his physicality reminiscent of Sporting striker Victor Gyokeres, fits well as the lone striker.

If Amorim can increase Hojlund’s shooting frequency, more goals should follow.

Midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte could also benefit.

Mainoo’s skill in tight spaces could shine as a second-phase midfielder, while Ugarte is well-suited to the first-phase combatitive midfield role, having already played it under Amorim at Sporting.

Both Lisandro Martinez and Onana’s ball-playing abilities might be more effectively utilized.

As the left-sided centre-back, Martinez will have more time to pick out players, though he could even push into midfield in this system, given his comfort on the ball.
