Right Wing-Back
When Ruben Amorim arrived at Manchester United, one of the biggest questions asked was: who would play in the wing-back roles?
These positions are vital in Amorim’s system.
They demand link-up play, end product, defensive awareness, and, most importantly, the ability to cover the entire flank.
Manchester United lack truly natural fits for these roles.
Initially, Amorim experimented with Amad Diallo at right wing-back.
Amad excelled, using the space ahead of him to carry the ball and create danger for the opposition.
However, in recent games, Amad has been pushed further up into the right attacking midfield role.
This shift makes sense.
Amad is likely to thrive as a right-sided “10,” closer to goal, where his balance and close control can help United progress centrally.
As a result, a new option may be needed at right wing-back.
Amorim has already used Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui there, both solid choices.
Yet, against weaker opposition, Amorim will likely seek someone who offers a greater attacking threat.
This is where Antony comes in.
During his cameos at right wing-back, Antony has impressed with his energy, constantly bombing up and down the flank.
He has linked play well, made smart decisions on the ball, and contributed to chance creation.
That said, Antony still needs to improve defensively – a point Amorim has emphasised himself.
But the early signs are promising.
Amorim has been clear that every player will get a fresh start under his management.
Could right wing-back be the position that revives Antony’s Manchester United career?
