Reasons for his Drop Off

One of the primary reasons behind Bruno Fernandes’s dip in output under Erik ten Hag lies in his changing role within the team.

Under previous managers, particularly Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Fernandes was positioned closer to goal, where his forward runs and instinctive play could shine.

In this advanced role, he thrived by roaming around the opposition’s box, taking shots, and creating chances for his teammates, where he is most effective.

Under ten Hag, however, Fernandes has often dropped deeper and tasked with operating in different areas of the pitch.

This shift has limited his ability to influence the game where it matters most.

Instead of utilizing his creativity and shooting ability in and around the box, he has been forced to play further back, often relying on long balls that rarely result in meaningful attacks.

This adjustment not only stifles Fernandes’s strengths but also adds unnecessary congestion to United’s midfield.

The numbers underline this decline.

This season, Fernandes went 13 games without a goal under ten Hag.

In contrast, under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, he rediscovered his scoring touch, netting four goals in just four games.

Manchester United will hope that Ruben Amorim can replicate that success and restore Fernandes to his best role in the team.
